Histoire du bol

History of the bowl

DEFINITION AND HISTORY OF THE BOWL

Appearing at the very beginning of the 18th century, the bowl then replaced the typical object that was at the time the bowl . If Defining a bowl seems useless and vain... And yet there are so many things to say about this kitchen accessory halfway between kitchen utensil and tableware that can be found in any kitchen. A bowl is above all a function and a form that defines the object: a piece of kitchenware generally hemispherical in shape used to contain certain drinks. It is undoubtedly one of the most used kitchen utensils . With time and the evolution of uses and fashions, it has also established itself for all kinds of occasions: whether at breakfast , during an aperitif , a meal or dinner or even as part of a recipe, it is necessarily out. A common and functional kitchen accessory, it can also become a true designer object depending on the material it is made from, its shape or the patterns that highlight it. It can also become a customizable object if we refer to the famous Breton bowl (first name bowl) generally bearing the first name of their owner.

MATERIALS AND SHAPES OF BOWLS
When it is made by a passionate craftsman, shaped by the hands of its creator, the bowl becomes a unique piece full of history and tradition. A small utilitarian or decorative object (or both) which contains many riches and which brings craftsmanship into everyday life. They can be made from various materials: ceramic bowls ( porcelain bowl , stoneware bowl or earthenware bowl ), plastic bowl , metal bowl and even wooden bowl . When the bowl is handcrafted in ceramic it will be even more eco-responsible and durable . The bowl is also characterized by its shape: an almost perfect inverted half-sphere shape which is practical , functional and usual. If the shape varies little, we will still note the appearance in the 18th century of the eared bowl which allows a better grip of the object without fear of burning yourself!

MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES
As part of artisanal manufacturing, the bowls are traditionally turned by hand : an ancestral technique which goes through several stages: preparation of the clay (centering the clay on the wheel), turning and assembly, finishing and decoration, firing, drying then final firing.

CHOOSE YOUR TABLEWARE CAREFULLY
The choice of kitchen utensils and kitchen linen is not trivial. All these kitchen accessories contribute, just like food, to the success of a meal stimulated by all the senses: taste, but also sight and touch. The choice of tableware (a bowl or any other tableware) therefore requires a minimum of involvement depending on the table atmosphere , the table decoration for moments of conviviality to share.
